When you suffer a loss to your home or business, your first call is usually to your insurance company to speak with an insurance adjuster. If you have never had cause to file a property damage claim before, you may think that all adjusters are the same. In actuality, there are three different types of insurance claims adjusters, with only one exclusively looking out for you – the policyholder – and your best interests.
The insurance company's adjuster is employed by the insurer and specifically has the insurance company’s interests as their top priority. That means that when the insurance adjuster details and documents your loss, your claim will be adjusted to best suit the interests of the insurance company, i.e., their bottom line!
Independent adjusters also work on the side of the insurance company. While they aren’t direct employees of your insurance company, their function is nearly identical as that of the in-house insurance adjusters as they are contracted by the insurer as their insurance claims adjusters. Therefore the independent insurance adjusters’ job is to negotiate in favor of the insurance company and provide you with a settlement amount which they see as appropriate under your coverage limits.
The third type of insurance claims adjuster is the public adjuster. Public adjusters are not affiliated with the insurance companies in any manner, and work solely in the interest of the policyholder. Public insurance adjusters ensure that the insured's claim is documented, supported, and submitted in the proper format. They represent the policyholder throughout the course of the claims process to secure a fair settlement.
